Diary entry by Brad Munn

17/03/2002, Wheathampstead/Gustard Wood, Hertfordshire

Set off at about 3.30pm. Walked from Wheathampstead to the North towards Gustard Wood taking the footpath off to the left of Lamer Lane. Walked through the golf course and along public footpaths around the farm fields to the north-west of Wheathampstead. One particular field seemed to be a nesting area for a large group of Skylark - we saw at least 7 shooting up in their song flight and then diving back down into the low-lying crop. Heading east back toward Lamer Lane we saw a flock of about 6 Yellowhammer with a few Chaffinches. Crossed from Heron's Farm (where we heard but didn't see a Song Thrush!) over the North part of the golf course, crossed Lamer Lane walking up toward the Hertfordshire Way where we turned right back down to Lamer Lane and south back to Wheathampstead along the road. About 2 hours in all.
The weather: Cold and windy to start, rain began falling about half way through and downpour continued pretty much all the way back.
