Mallard Anas platyrhynchos Size: 50-62cm UK Status: common resident breader / passage visitor and common winter visitor | Stocky duck: Male easily identifiable with bottle-green head, brown breast seperated from head by narrow white neck ring. Dull yellow bill. Back and wings of male mainly grey with black tail feathers. Navy blue speculum bordered with white noticeable in flight. Female and juvenile mainly streaked brown with paler supercilium, and orange bill and variable dark eyestripe. Male eclipse plumage similar to female with paler head and red-brown breast. Common accross Britain throughout the year in parks, rivers, lakes and marshes etc. | |
