Goldcrest Regulus regulus Size: 8-9cm UK Status: very common resident breader / passage visitor and very common winter visitor | Smallest bird in region (alongside Firecrest). Pale green back with lighter front. Characteristic orange and yellow crown striped on either side with black (female lacks orange colour). Large-ish round black eye usually noticeable. Distinguished from similar Firecrest by lack of Firecrest's bolder eyestripe. Also far commoner in Britain than Firecrest! Can be found throughout the year across Britain in woodland (usually prefers the presense of conifer), often amoung tit flocks, especially during the winter. | |
