Redwing
Turdus iliacus
Size: 19-22cm
UK Status: rare migrant breader / very common winter visitor | Similar to Song Thrush, the Redwing is slightly smaller and usually identified by the striking face markings; bold white eyebrow and moustachial stripes with dark eyestripe in between. Also differentiated by red-brown underwing (visible in flight) and flank (usually visible when perched). Common winter visitor to the UK, often seen in flocks, sometimes along with Fieldfare (another wintering thrush). Resident in northern Europe where it breeds in coniferous and birch upland areas. While wintering in UK it can be found in fields, parks and any area with scattered trees. | |
