(Common) Redstart

UK Status: fairly common migrant breader / common passage visitor

Slender bird with distinctive plumage; grey crown and back, black bib and red-orange breast and tail. Tail fairly long with dark red stripe down the middle, constantly quivered while perched and fanned in flight. Female duller, with brown upperparts and buff-white underparts, still with red tail however. Male loses much of colour in winter plumage. Summer visitor to the UK and most of Europe. Breeds in woodland and parks with trees, can also be seen on passage in more open coastal areas such as heaths.
