Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava Size: 15-17cm UK Status: fairly common migrant breader / fairly common passage visitor | The shortest tailed wagtail. Greyish green-brown back with yellow underparts (somewhat duller in female). Many regional variations across Europe with regard to the head pattern, involving varioius levels of blue-grey, black, white and yellow. In Britain, the usual one is flavissima which has yellow face with crown and ear coverts the same colour as rest of upperparts. Summer visitor to most of England and Wales, inhabiting grassland, usually where there is evidence of water. Also often found around livestock. | |
