Size: 22-25cm
UK Status: fairly common resident breader | The commonest of the black-and-white woodpeckers in Britain and Europe. Has characterstic red beneath tail, large oval white patches on either side of back (particularly noticeable in flight), and adult male has small red patch on nape. Juvenile has red crown. Undulating flight, and quite acrobatic climbing tree trunks; can hang upside-down like tits. Resident across Britain, except Ireland, found in all types of woodland, or areas of grassland with some trees. | |
