(Common) Kingfisher Alcedo atthis Size: 16-19cm UK Status: scarce resident breader | Very distinctive bird, with bright blue-green upperparts and orange-brown underparts. White bib and cheek patches. Long straight dark bill. Despite bright colours very difficult to see when perched (usually undercover on branch overhanging river) - most likely spotted while flying by speedily just above the water. catched fish by diving head-first underwater. Resident all year across Britain, except Northern areas of Scotland. Nests in sandy banks beside rivers, streams and canals, sometimes Wintering in more coastal regions. | |
