(Common) Swift Apus apus Size: 16-18cm UK Status: fairly common migrant breader / common passage visitor | Sickle-shaped bird with V-shaped forked tail and long thin curved wings. Distinguished from Swallow and Martins by larger size, and by plumage - dark all over except small white throat area. Rarely settles (only when nesting), normally seen circling high in half gliding, half fluttering flight. Summer visitor to the UK, arriving late and leaving early. Usually found above open country and built up areas. | |
