Two variants of the Barn Owl appear in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, the Western and Southern varieties having a white breast, more Eastern ones having pale orange underparts with fine dark spots. Upperparts of all Barn Owls are grey and golden-buff. Pale heart-shaped face. Hunts at night as well as dawn and dusk. Resident across Britain throughout the year, preferring farmland and open country with scattered trees. Occasionally nesting in old buildings.
