Herring Gull

Large gull, adult with grey back and white head and underparts. Yellow bill with orange spot. Wings have black tips with white spots. General "rounded" appearance compared to Black-headed Gull and the like. Pinkish legs distinguish from Lesser Black-backed Gull. Juveniles take 4 years to reach adult plumage, growing from mottled brown with dark bill to gradual appearance of grey back and lightening of plumage through to adult. Common breeder found around the British coast throughout the year, although also appears inland in areas of short grass and rubbish dumps etc.
