UK Status: fairly common resident migrant breader / passage visitor and common winter visitor

Grey-brown wader with red legs and bill. Most readily identified by wide white edge to wing visible in flight. Also in flight displays white wedge-shaped rump. Adult plumage darkens during summer. Commonest wader in Britain, found breeding in coastal marshland and some inland wet areas. Also seen on passage and in winter.
