(Eurasian) Coot Fulica atra Size: 36-41cm UK Status: fairly common resident breader / common winter visitor | Plump black waterfowl with white bill and 'bald' forehead plate. Strong grey-green legs and large lobed feet. Floats and dives on lakes, large ponds and slow-moving water, often in flocks. Often 'walks' on water during take-off or in alarm, flapping and splashing feet on surface. Juvenile grey-brown with pale breast, bib and face. Resident accross much of Britain and Europe, with some migration. Common water bird in UK. | |
